GMOs and the Developing World – Professor Margaret Smith (Cornell University)

Professor Smith Flyer

Come watch Professor Margaret Smith present on GMOs and their role in the developing world! As you know, there are many stigmas attached to GMOs—but are they really that bad? Many people in the developing world heavily rely on their crops for economic or food security, so the growing uncertainty in climate patterns pose a challenge to these farmers, and better seeds may be the answer these farmers are looking for.

Professor Smith has spent 30 years at Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Science’s Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics. She is optimistic about GMOs and her current research goal is to enhance our understanding of corn adaptation to marginal environments and develop genetic materials that will improve corn productivity and sustainability in such environments. She also helps educate farmers at home, here in NY, to improve their decision-making in selecting seeds. She is volunteering her time to come to UB to continue her outreach and address any questions you may have!
